Youth Mentoring Impact
Dear Laura,
Just a note to thank you for such a fun evening last night for myself and all the kids. You’re an angel not to mind me bringing a small clan. Amy* lives with between 4 to 5 other children in the household and they never get very much. I know they all had such a great time and came away from the rink laden with all their prizes they had won and the blankets and candy bags.
You and your team did a great job and covered all the bases!
I wish Beth* had been a bit more responsive to you. She says that she sees you all the time at school. I want to get her to smile more and sometimes I think she carries the world on her shoulders. Our time together every week is developing a bond between us, slow but sure. And twice now I have taken her with me when I have run errands on the weekends and we have gone out to lunch. Just another little way to connect.
I was disappointed last night when she didn’t brighten up a little when you asked her if she liked having a tutor. I had hoped (and looked) for a smile, if not in her face, perhaps in her eyes. But nothing was there. I stay hopeful, though. She has told me before that she wishes I was her Grandma and how she thinks I am nice. She listens to me for the most part but she gets exasperated at times and I have to be very calm and re-assuring to boost her up a little bit.
Suffice it to say that things are well between us and we are doing good as a team. I look forward to getting with Meg* (another SEICAA mentor) and her little girl and doing some shared activities.
Have a good rest of the week.
Kind Regards
Jo*
